The QS World University Rankings recently features the 300 top electrical engineering universities in the world. If you are considering to become an electrical engineer one day, then this article will help you find schools that can provide you with the top education to prepare you for this field.

Best Electrical Engineering Schools

Canada and United States

The U.S. is the home of 57 electrical engineering schools. Five of them are in the top 10, while the rest are in the top 50. Among them are California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Canada, meanwhile, has 15 of the world’s best electrical engineering schools. Four of them are in the top 100. The University of British Colombia and the University of Toronto are in the top 50, while the University of Waterloo and McGill University are in the top 100.


China takes the lead in Asia. Twenty-one of its schools entered the list, where five are in the top 100. These include the Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. South Korea, meanwhile, has 12 entries in the ranking, including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Seoul National University.

Japan also has 12 of its electrical engineering schools in the list, including the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Three more Japanese schools were able to enter the top 100. Taiwan is another Asian country that houses 11 of the world’s best electrical engineering schools, including the National Tsing Hua University, the National Taiwan University, and the National Chiao Tung University.

India and Malaysia each have eight schools on the list. Six of India’s universities entered the top 100, like the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s list included the Universiti Malaya.

All five entries in Hong Kong entered the top 100, with the three highest ranked being the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Singapore, Thailand, and Pakistan each had two entries in the list. Indonesia also has one school in the ranking, the Bandung Institute of Technology.


Europe has 27 entries in the ranking, where three of them entered the top 10. Four more schools made it in the top 100, such as the University College London, University of Manchester, the University of Southampton, and the University of Edinburgh. Italy is another tough contender, with 12 of its entries making it into the list, including the Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino.

Germany has 10 schools in the ranking, with two of them in the top 50, namely the Technische Universitat Berline and the Technische Universitat Munchen. Nine more schools are found in Spain, with the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya making it into top 100. Meanwhile, France has seven entries, including the Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1. Ireland has five of its top universities in the ranking, and two of which made it in the top 50.

Other European nations with schools that made the list include Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands, Russia, Greece, and Belgium. Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, and Switzerland each have two of the world’s best electrical engineering schools. Portugal, Hungary, and Serbia each have one entry.

Latin America

Latin America has 15 entries in the list. Eight of them is in Brazil, while three are in Mexico. Chile, meanwhile, has two. The highest ranked is the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico entering the top 150.

New Zealand

New Zealand is home to two of the top electrical engineering schools, with the University of Auckland entering the top 100. Australia has 15 entries in the ranking. Seven of them are in the top 100.

Middle East

Nine entries came from the Middle East. Four of them are in Turkey, with the highest ranked being the Middle East Technical University in the top 150. Saudi Arabia houses three entries in the list, while Israel has two.
